The new Nature’s Notebook mobile app includes new features long requested by Nature’s Notebook observers as well as a new leveled approach to making observations. This session will go in depth on the new features of the new app and answer your questions.

Hear from scientists who have used Nature’s Notebook data in their research and have a chance to ask them questions. 

This workshop provides an overview of the USA-National Phenology Network and how you can use their application, Nature's Notebook, to record the life-cycle of native pollinator plants.  You'll receive training to be a community scientist and then observe phenological activity in youryard to help our understanding of how seasonal changes impact our environment, native host and nectar plants and pollinators.

In 1980, Texas Woman's University was designated as the location for the annual celebration of Texas Wildflower Day, 

TWU adjunct instructor Carroll Abbott, who was also a wildflower preservationist and lobbyist and founder of the Native Plant Society of Texas, joined former TWU president Mary Evelyn Blagg Huey in lobbying the Texas legislature in the late 1970s to have the fourth Saturday in April designated as Texas Wildflower Day.

The Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden is the site of each year's celebration, as well as the Ann Stuart Science Center.

“The Texas Woman's University recognizes that the beauty of its native plants has enriched the history of our State and the lives of its people," Blagg Huey said in 1980. "Thus, it has a strong commitment to the conservation, dissemination and appreciation of our state's wildflowers. From this commitment, strong advocacy developed within the University community to support the statutory designation of a State Wildflower Day.”

Details about the events, exhibits, lectures, contests, guided tours of the Butterfly Garden, and workshops will be available in early April 2026.

Fireflies are more than just a nostalgic childhood memory; they are vital indicators of a healthy ecosystem. In this presentation, Xerces Ambassador Mei Ling Liu explores the science-based efforts of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation to protect these essential insects and their habitats. We will dive into the specific challenges fireflies face area and discuss actionable, science-backed strategies for conservation—from reducing pesticide use to implementing effective light pollution mitigation.

About Our Speaker

Mei Ling Liu serves as the Education Specialist for the Texas Conservation Alliance, educating the public on how to build better habitats through native plants and dark sky advocacy. As a Texas Master Naturalist, she is passionate about empowering others to become stewards of the natural world.

In 2025, Mei Ling became an Ambassador for the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. She is a vocal advocate for the science-based preservation of invertebrates and the global conservation efforts needed to protect the habitats that sustain them.
